Driving to La Pesca
From
Brownsville Texas. An easy 4 – 41/2 hour drive. Go through speed bump hell
in Matamoros down the 180 to Soto La Marina (approx 270 kms) and make a
turn east towards the Gulf on Highway 70. It is a 50 km drive to La Pesca past a
navy base and onward.
From CD
Victoria drive East on Highway 70 until you reach the coast – approximately 170
kms. Good Roads
About
La Pesca
(Some
gardens or little orchards with citrus, mango, papaya and coconut lead you in as
you gently roll down and around the gentle curves of Highway 70 – a two lane
country road that leads you towards La Pesca – a tourist town on the edge of
discovery.)
La Pesca
or “the fishing” is a tiny town situated on the Gulf of Mexico some 50 KMs or so
from the Tropic of Cancer. Sitting on the mouth of the Rio Soto La Marina and
the Lagoon Almagre, the town lives up to its name. Serious fishers also come to
La Pesca for the abundance of different fish: trout, snook, tarpon,
shrimp, crabs and baitfish.
La Pesca
is a Mexican destination where money is pesos and English is a foreign language.
It is a weekend retreat and attracts those from Monterrey and CD Victoria who
need a little beach time at the end of the work week and on holidays.
The town
remains small and simple. Mini-supers. A number of stalls or houses with fresh
Camarones for sale. Cervezas. Come buy them here the signs cry. A small tourist
area includes a few stores selling the occasional beach flip flops or beach
balls. There are no Starbucks with double foam lattes, McDonalds or Wal-Mart’s.
It is not flashy or pretentious; rather the mood is simplicity at its best.
Honest.
Off the
beaten path with good prices, decent restaurants and no frills dining.
A
striking beach lies just East of town. Great for long walks, picnics and
silence. You will be impressed with the flocks of parrots and other incredible
birds in the waters and along the river. Bring binoculars and a good camera.
