Teotihuacan Main
Entrance and Starting Your Exploration
ENTRANCE
FEES
The current cost for an adult is 57pesos. For those with a
Mexican Old Age Card the entrance is free.
Mexican Nationals and Residents (with residency cards) are free
on Sundays.
There are NO lockers nor is there a coatroom. Pack accordingly.
Vendors
There are many vendors at the entrance
to the sites as well as inside the gates. You can buy
tablecloths to beads; jaguar stones to bows and arrows. Common
items include clothing such as t-shirts, shirts, tops, hats and
shawls.
Some sell good quality items while a
majority sell trinkets and bobbles to take home as gifts. Black
volcanic rock carvings are also popular; shapes of pyramids,
Aztec Gods and masks. If you are inclined to purchase silver
here, ensure it is marked with “925” or “Sterling.”
We advise you to stay away from
purchasing clay idols or ancient looking pottery. While there
are many reproductions available, to the novice they are
indistinguishable from the original. There are stiff fines and
server legal repercussions if you try to export original
antiquities.
Purchasing in Shops
It is common for owners and sales people to call you trying to
lure you into their store. Once inside they will likely follow
you around as you look at various items. Generally speaking you
do not bargain on a price if there is a price tag on the item.
If the salesperson begins the bargaining process it is fair
game.
Purchasing on Site
Vendors are everywhere onsite in
Teotihuacan. If you wish to avoid them, it is best to arrive
when the gates open as they arrive at 10 am or so when the tour
busses pour in.
The onsite vendors walk around the
ancient plazas or line the Avenue of the Dead to lure tourists
as they explore the site. Some feel the vendors are too
aggressive and disturb the “sacred, religious feel” to the
experience. Others say that vendors have always been a part of
the Mexican life both ancient and modern, and that to ban the
vendors would seriously impact the livelihood of many families.
If you do not want to purchase
anything simply do not engage your eyes at the vendor or what
they are selling. Whan approached say simply “No gracias.”
Reapeat if necessary.
Food and Beverages
Bring water to hydrate as you walk the
site. There are vending machines at the entrances and a
restaurant at the main entrance.
Recycling
The site is equipped with many organic
and inorganic waste bins throughout the site – primarily on the
Avenue of the Dead,
Washrooms
There are male and female washrooms
located at the entrances of the site.
Wheelchair Accessibility
There is limited wheelchair
accessibility to Teotihuacan. Located at Gate 3, there is a
special wheelchair ramp where wheelchair bound travelers can
view the Pyramid of the Moon Plaza and see the magnificence of
the Avenue of the dean and Pyramid of the Sun and Moon.
Begin
Your Journey
We recommend you start your journey and walk up the Avenue of
the Dead. Visit each of the pryamids and structure sites as you
can.
Main Gate
Drive
walk or taxi to the Main Gate. There is a traffic booth where
they collect the admission and if you are driving, collect the
parking fees. Pay and proceed beside the parking lot to the main
entrance where you will be asked for your tickets.
The Main entrance
has a large blue entrance arch with what appears to be the
descending God reaching down towards you. Ask for a site
brochure when you go inside..
Washrooms and a
restaurant are available here.
When
you leave the main entrance you will be facing the Citadel and
to your left you will see the main thoroughfare - the Avenue of
the Dead.
Enjoy your
explorations!
