- The House of the Grinding Stone
by Dorothy and Bill Bell
Likely built between
900 to 1200 AD as residences for the upper class, the structure
is also known as the House of Metates because of a number
of concave grinding stones and fragments that were left in the
area. Grinding
Stones are used to crush corn and other foods
in Mayan food preparation and cooking.
There was also an
abundance of pottery chards and earthenware fragments indicating
domestic occupation. From the grand architecture and the
Atlantean Columns is was surmised that the occupants were of an
elite class.
