Entry Requirements to Mexico for Americans

This section, Entry Requirements to Mexico for Americans, is a summary of documents you require when entering and driving in Mexico. We have tried to include the major subsections that would apply to most travelers. Please visit each section to make sure you bring supporting documents with you.

1. Identification

As of March 1, 2010, all U.S. citizens – including children — must present a valid passport, book or card, for travel beyond the “border zone” into the interior of Mexico.   Entry by any means, for example by plane or car, is included in this requirement.  The “border zone” is generally defined as an area between 20 to 30 kilometers of the border with the U.S., depending on the location.

2. Vehicle Import Permit
Required to Drive in Most of Mexico

4. Visa

Not required for Americans who wish to visit Mexico as tourists, on business, as a journalist, for studies, or passing through Mexico, for a period not exceeding 180

A Mexican RESIDENT visa is required for those staying longer than 180 days in Mexico. Stays of less than 72 hours within the border zone do not require a visa or tourist card.

5. Mexico Migratory Form

Citizens of the USA MUST obtain a travel permit called the Multiple Migratory Form or Forma Migratoria Múltiple (FMM). If you arrive by air, it will be provided by your airline. You must always keep a copy with you.

6. US Driver’s License

Should always be carried

Mexican Insurance is invalid if you do not have a non-Mexican, driver’s license.
