Faces of Mexico –

Teotihuacán (translated from the Nahuatl as "City of the Gods")

by Bill & Dorothy Bell

Just 30 miles outside Mexico City lies the great ancient city of Teotihuacán.

Pyramid of the Sun

Teotihuacán was built in the Classic Period around the time of Christ and grew into the fourth century from 60,000 to 80,000 inhabitants to 125,000 making it the 6th largest city in the world. It had a well defined class structure, calendar, and its inhabitants created a written language and numbering system. It was the leading trading and political centre in Mesoamerica.

It was named Teotihuacán by the Nahual after the city’s demise – the original name and the name of the ethnic groups who founded the city are still unknown. The City’s sudden collapse in the seventh century was marked by fire and the plundering of the sacred buildings. It’s trading and religious influence waned.

Climbing the Pyramid of the Sun

The city was built along a 2 mile main road called Avenue of the Dead with ceremonial centers, housing for the upper classes and monuments lining the way. The Pyramid of the Moon is located at the far Northern end of the Avenue flanking a large ceremonial plaza. Right next to it is the third largest pyramid in the world and the largest stone pyramid in all of Pre-Columbian America; the Pyramid of Sun, 738 ft. on each side and about 213 ft. tall.

Take a good camera and plenty of fluids. Wear proper walking shoes so you can walk, and if so inclined, climb up the stairs to the top of the Sun and Moon. It is an experience you will never forget.

You can visit this Teotihuacán while staying in Mexico City; tour busses arrive hourly. If you are taking your rig there is a campsite in the nearby town that has full hookups for your stay.

More Interior Road Logs and Driving Guides

"This is the second year we have used Bill and Dots 'ontheroadin" Mexican logs for travel on the coast and interior of Mexico. They are easy to use, save a lot of indecision and more than a lot of arguments as to where one should turn or where there is a Pemex large enough for a large rig with a tow. We appreciate all the work they have done to make traveling in Mexico a great and easy adventure."
